STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV) — They say it’s the most wonderful time of the year for a reason: December is filled with holiday cheer and people looking to do some good.
On Thursday, three local businesses teamed up for the “Build a Meal” project to benefit the Verona Community Food Pantry, which provides food to people living below the poverty level.
Lantz Construction Company and Lineage Architects put their skills to good use Thursday by building a holiday scene, entirely out of canned goods, in the lobby of the new Frontier Community Bank.
This event has been done annually over the last three years to raise awareness and funds for the pantry, which serves around 7,000 people each month in Staunton, Augusta, and Waynesboro.
Using pasta, cereal and spaghetti sauce, the team was able to build a Christmas tree complete with lights and a fireplace to match.
“It’s a great opportunity for the companies to come together and come to one movement to really support what’s happening here,” said Leland McCray, project manager at Lantz Construction.
“If we didn’t have the support from the community, there’s no way we could run our food pantry because our bill at the food bank is unbelievable,” said Hunter Fauber, the man who started the Verona Community Food Pantry.
The structure will be disassembled on January 3 and then donated to the pantry.
Frontier Community Bank, Lantz Construction Company and Lineage Architects will be accepting donations on behalf of the pantry for the remainder of the month.
