Spring Flooding!
While spring brings the promise of warm weather and longer days, it also brings a variety of conditions that can include heavy rains and severe weather.
Floods are one of the most common hazards in the United States, however not all floods are alike. Some floods develop slowly, while others such a flash floods, can develop in just a few minutes and without visible signs of rain. Additionally, floods can be local, impacting a neighborhood or community, or very large, affecting entire river basins and multiple states.
As reported in the DNR, the relentless rain that has pounded the central Valley this week shut down Shenandoah County schools and 30+ roads in the county Wednesday. Luckily here in Rockingham County, no major issues were reported.
Long periods of heavy rain like we saw this week can make a construction site messy and potentially dangerous.
Heavy rain has been known to halt construction but luckily this storm didn’t have much of an affect on our current construction sites. One project needed to have water pumped from the site but nothing too extensive.
“While construction didn’t come to a complete stop, it did slow up one site for two days,” said Allen Hatch, Safety Director. “We had some pretty deep pools fill up in the footers but they were pumped before any real damage was done.”
Let’s hope the rest of spring won’t bring more extended periods of rain or flooding to the area.
