About This Project
JMU’s Department of Military Science now has a new, one-of-a-kind facility for developing their cadet’s physical and mental fitness. This center was designed specifically to help their 160 Army cadets and 80 Air Force cadets prepare for military training and fitness tests. The renovated space includes a modern weight room, classroom space for group training exercises, and a cadet rehabilitation area.
Located inside Memorial Hall, the space formerly served as Harrisonburg High School’s auxiliary gym and had once been used by JMU’s Fencing Club. The renovation’s scope of work included the installation of: a combined flooring system, comprised of interlocking rubber floor tiles and artificial turf, new wall graphics featuring the various emblems of the military branches and the American flag, new double doors between the gym and existing classroom space, and new gym equipment. We also updated the electrical system, laminated drywall over the gym’s existing plaster ceiling, painted the ceiling black, and maintained the existing walls, chair rail, mezzanine, and brick façade.
The new facility enables instructors to diversity how they teach and provides training opportunities not previously available. Overall, this project aligns with the university’s mission and commitment of ensuring their cadets are prepared and ready to serve as future military leaders upon graduation.
