About This Project

The SMJH Early Learning Center is a thoughtfully designed, purpose‑built childcare center located on the Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital campus in Charlottesville, Virginia. This new, approximately 12,700‑square‑foot center will serve up to 148 children under age five, with priority enrollment for SMJH team members and first responders. With extended hours designed around healthcare shift schedules, this project supports work/life balance, strengthens caregiver recruitment and retention, and helps meet a broader community need. The single‑story building features a variety of clearly organized classrooms, dedicated infant and toddler areas, flexible learning spaces, a gross motor skills room, administrative offices,  indoor and outdoor playgrounds, and a welcoming secure entry, all designed to promote comfort, early childhood development, and ease of supervision.

Lantz partnered with Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital, the Piedmont Family YMCA, and Kahler Slater to bring this much‑needed resource to the hospital’s campus, helping address the region’s urgent childcare needs. High standards for safety, accessibility, and building performance were integrated throughout, including full sprinkler coverage, ADA‑compliant spaces, and durable, low‑maintenance materials suited for a high‑use educational environment. We were proud to be a part of this meaningful step toward supporting families, caregivers, and the Charlottesville community.
